Charles Darwin and Romance?

This is Cammie Backus, Senior Director of Executive Office Operations, here to fill you in on a wonderful author visit we had with Deborah Heiligman yesterday at RIF. Deborah is a prolific writer of both fiction and nonfiction for all ages; her latest book, Charles and Emma, is a romance biography of Charles and Emma Darwin and has been nominated for a National Book Award in the category of Young People’s Literature.
Most fascinating for many of us was learning more about the work that goes into compiling nonfiction books such as Deborah’s holiday series—everything from seeking out experts in the field to taste-testing the holiday recipes. This series’ emphasis on portraying the diversity of each holiday’s celebrants fits perfectly with the “windows” concept RIF often refers to from the paper “Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors.”
Many thanks to Deborah for a terrific visit! We’ll all keep our fingers crossed for you on November 18 when the National Book Awards are announced.
Cammie
