COVER STORY: Four Cinderella Covers
August 10th, 2009

Earlier I posted about the concept of a One Shot and noted there would be a Southeast Asia One Shot on August 12. Because we now enter that week, Cover Story this week features four versions of the story of Cinderella from countries and cultures represented in the One Shot (the Philippines, Cambodia, a Hmong village, and the Spice Islands of Indonesia). It would be interesting in a classroom to have children discuss what these covers alone might predict about the story of Cinderella in the countries as well as whether there are any hints as to how the stories might be the same as and/or different from the story of Cinderella as we know it in America. Perhaps later this year we will have a posting on what is learned about those differences and similarities!
Happy reading!
Carol
Cover Story is a feature every Monday on Rasco From RIF where I share with you the “face” of a book that has caught my eye or that readers have submitted. Cover Story does not discuss the content of the book. I hope you will share your favorite “cover story” with me now and then!

Wow – those are beautiful. I’ve tended to be pretty cranky about those fairy princess tales, since it can be argued that they depict girls who wait for some guy to make things right so they can live Happily Ever After, but I must admit that I love, love, LOVE the same stories from different angles. I’ll be these are a great read.

Hello, my friends! I write from a terrace in Croatia where I am taking a long awaited vacation after two yrs of budget battles with Congress! Brought only the Blackberry which I am checking once daily. Thanks for dropping by to see the Cinderellas! Susan, look over some past Cover Stories, would be interested in your take on poetry in Blacker the Berry. I loved preparing and studying for One Shot, great “focus” mechanism! As my grandmother signed everything “More later.”

For subversion, I like the bottom right, with the big ol’ crocodile front and center. The traditional Cinderella story could only be improved with all those teeth! Based upon my subconcious reader radar (and who knows how *that* works) I would most likely choose to read the top, Jouanah. The clean design, and the serene and serious girl make me want to find out about her.
This is a great post idea. Thanks!

Thanks, Alisa, for stopping by, just left you a Comment on your post about the book set in Ghana…weird that today we visit one another’s blogs independently! I love your comments, and because I posted these just prior to leaving on vacation I truly haven’t read the four and look forward to doing so upon return to the office tomorrow….
