WEDNESDAY WINDOW: Just Like Me: Stories and Self-Portraits by Fourteen Artists

July 22nd, 2009

The 14 artists highlighted in this book have been sharing their art for 20 years. In this volume each has shared a childhood photo, a current photo and a self-portrait along with a short essay about the role of art in his or her life. From Enrique Chagoya’s playful humor to Carmen Lomas Garza recalling her self-drawn paper doll clothes in the early years and the inspiration her mother gave her, to Nancy Hom who was born in China and came to America when she was 5, this book brings artists alive and allows the young reader to understand better this term “art.”

The book is a product of Children’s Book Press for which all the artists have served as illustrators. When Children’s Book Press was started by Harriet Rohmer in 1975, she stated “my dream was for all children to be able to open a book and see themselves.” RIF applauds Harriet and those who now serve at Children’s Book Press for this dedication to multicultural and bi-lingual publications.

Happy Reading!

This book has been a favorite of mine. I really like how children not only see themselves in it, but it can also be used to extend the book experience by letting them draw their own portrait and biography. Great book!

Thank you for highlighting Just Like Me and the work of Children’s Book Press! We like to think of all our books as both “mirrors” and “windows.” We’re proud to have had RIF as a partner throughout the years. Thank you again!

Thank you, Patricia and Janet for stopping by Rasco from RIF! I too am intrigued with all the possibilities this book presents for children to draw and write and discuss the content in relation to their own experiences and those of the featured artists.

Janet, RIF is delighted as well to partner with the Children’s Book Press and looks forward to many more wonderful years together motiving children and showing them through mirrors and windows the wide world that is theirs to explore and impact!

Thank you both again, happy reading!

I love the thought of books that make art accessible to kids. It sounds wonderful.

Susan, as you can tell from my blog entries since I started last October, I am a lover of art and look for ways all the time to expose children and actively involve them in appreciation of art and participating in the artistic experience. This book is a great one for achieving those outcomes! And the publisher is one that has wonderful multicultural titles.
