Yes, there is indeed a RIF Barbie doll!
July 13th, 2009
Reports in the newspaper this weekend about a thousand plus people in DC for a Barbie Doll Convention and their debates about whether collected Barbie dolls should be kept in or out of the box reminded me of the RIF Barbie (in a box) on my office bookshelf. That’s right, a RIF Barbie! Were you aware? Currently listed online as follows:
Barbie – Love To Read Deluxe Gift Set – Limited Edition – Barbie Doll 2 Kelly Dolls 1992 $68.99
A 1992 Mattel production. Included in this set is a Barbie Doll, 2 x Kelly dolls – 1 white and 1 Ethnic-AA, Story Book – My Little Book of Mother Goose Rhymes, clothing that the dolls are wearing, and a Hairbrush. From each sale of this Gift Set a total of $1. was donated by Toys R Us + Mattel to Reading is Fundamental to help promote reading + literacy. There is a Cut Out Book Mark on the back of the box and Storytime Fun Games inside the box.
In searching online for the RIF Barbie photo, I also found a fascinating article posted on the Arthur W. Page Society Case Study Competition in Corporate Communications with the 2006 Grand Prize Winner shown as Liesbeth De Smedt of the Annenberg School for Communications, University of Southern California for a paper titled “THE BARBIE CASE.” (You may have to scroll through significant white space to get to the list of winners/case study itself.) And what is this Arthur W. Page Society? First, I learned Arthur W. Page is considered the “father of corporate public relations.” The Society itself is ”a select membership organization for senior public relations and corporate communications executives who seek to strengthen the management policy role of the corporate public relations officer.” The competition is held annually with submissions solicited from business schools and communications/journalism schools. I assure you, there is a lot of Barbie info in this winning paper! Lest you think this Society only focuses on “Barbie” type case studies, think again and peruse the list of other 2006 winners or even the award winning 2009 case studies!
Yes, indeed, this is one posting you can clearly call “musing” from Rasco!
Happy Reading!
