Have we got some ideas for YOU!
June 9th, 2009
Everywhere I turn this week I hear parents talking about school being out and already the refrain around the house is “I’m bored, I don’t have anything to do.” So, here are some RIF ideas for kids of all ages!
An older child can read with younger children and log minutes to win neat prizes! RIF says a big “Thank You” to all the participants in the 2009 Read with Kids Challenge who helped us reach our goal of 5 million minutes read with kids—but we’re not ready to stop! Keep logging those minutes until June 30. All participants are eligible to win a US Airways Vacations package to the Walt Disney World® Resort and other great prizes, like the current “Snuggie a Day”!
The June, July, and August activity calendars are ready. Remember we have them for ages birth to 5 and then for ages 6-15. And all calendars can be downloaded in Spanish and in English! For the younger children in June you’ll find suggestions about making “silly faces in the mirror” and making sock puppets. For older students there are ideas about celebrating National Bald Eagle Day or writing TV commercials for favorite books (and maybe I would add, you can have some videos made of those ads?) and a suggestion to celebrate Meteor Watch Day!
Special summer tips for parents as well as printable brochures on various topics (with info on obtaining bulk orders) are all on the web waiting to inform you of great ideas!
Finally, don’t forget the many things your child can enjoy on the award-winning sites we have for children themselves: Leading to Reading and the Reading Planet!
Happy summer reading!
